Veterinarians are the primary go-to for medical issues that arise with disabled and senior pets. These pets are predisposed to their specific medical conditions and disabilities, so it’s important to have a good relationship with a veterinarian who will take a holistic, compassionate approach and interest in your disabled or chronically ill pet. They also may have clients who have pets with similar issues to yours that are willing to answer questions and offer support for you and your pet.
Support groups and rescue organizations that focus on a particular disability, species, breed, or age of pets offer ongoing support for individuals who have questions and need help adjusting to and maintaining everyday routines with their disabled pets. Many of these groups also rescue, rehabilitate, and place disabled pets who need to be rehomed.
Here is a list of online support groups and rescue organizations dedicated to disabled and special needs pets and their people. There’s overlap between categories so please check all that apply to your pet’s diagnosis and needs. The list is continuously updated so check back often.
